Distribution has become one of the biggest strategic challenges facing small breweries and cideries. As consolidation continues among beverage distributors, many independent producers are exploring alternatives that allow them to maintain relationships with retailers while protecting margins and brand storytelling.
Executive Editor Jon Sicotte spoke with Jeremy Hall of Blossom Barn Cidery and David Lehane of Drop Bear Brewery about the launch of the Oregon Makers Cooperative, a self-distribution partnership that allows each producer to sell the other’s cans and kegs directly to retail accounts. Instead of relying entirely on traditional wholesalers, the cooperative allows the producers to expand their geographic reach while keeping sales relationships — and margins — in the hands of the people making the beverages.
